Why a BCS Playoff System Works

  • Prestige and relevance of BCS Bowls are maintained and enhanced

  • Prestige and relevance of Conference Championships are maintained and enhanced

  • All conferences—small and large—are encouraged to increase overall level of play, and the six strongest conferences from the previous season are rewarded the following year with an automatic berth in the Quarterfinals of the BCS Playoff System

  • Bowl host cities are encouraged to promote their game and offer the most generous payout, and those who do it best are rewarded by being in the Playoff System as BCS Tier 1 or Tier 2 Bowl Games

  • Top 8 BCS teams are virtually guaranteed of getting a playoff berth

  • Relevance of BCS Ranking and Scoring is maintained and enhanced by using it to select Quarterfinal teams and determine Semifinal match-ups

  • Length of season (# of games played) for teams who qualify for playoffs is not extended

  • All Bowl Games, in addition to the BCS Tier 1 and Tier 2 Bowl Games, are still allowed to exist, but are not a part of the BCS Playoff System
